Lilian Schaer, Principal

Lilian is an independent agricultural writer, editor and communications specialist who has been communicating about food and farming for more than a decade.

She works with farm groups in the crop, horticulture and livestock sectors, as well as many different organizations from the farm to the fork.

In addition to her communications work, Lilian is an active freelance journalist with monthly columns for the Guelph Mercury and The Grower.

Her work has appeared in Ontario Hog Farmer, Ontario Beef Farmer, Canadian Cattlemen, Ontario Grain Farmer, The Corn Producer, British Farmer and Grower, Ontario Farmer, The Farm Journalist, Ontario Dairy Farmer, The Guelph Tribune, Owen Sound Sun Times, Waterloo Region Record and Canadian Woodworking.

Prior to working independently, Lilian worked in management roles with AGCare, the University of Guelph and Ontario Pork, where she was responsible for producer communications, media relations, promotion programs and issues management.

Lilian is co-chair of the 2011 International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) annual congress, an event that is being hosted by Canada for the first time since 1967 and is expected to attract more than 200 agricultural journalists from 30 countries to southern Ontario. She is a 2010 winner of the IFAJ Alltech Young Leaders’ Award for agricultural journalism.

Lilian is a graduate of the University of Guelph (1999) and the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program (Class 10, 2003-05). She’s also an active blogger and promoter of food and farming using social media tools like Twitter and Facebook and often gets asked to speak on this topic.

Her blog, Food and Farming Canada, focuses on the farming side of food.
