About

Lilian Schaer, Agri-Food Project Services Ltd.
Writer, Editor & Communications Professional

I’m an independent agri-food writer, editor and communications specialist who has been communicating about food and farming for more than 15 years. I specialize in writing about farming for farmers, as well as telling the story of the farming side of food to the 98 per cent of Canadians who aren’t involved in agriculture.

I work with farm groups in the crop, horticulture and livestock sectors, as well as many different agricultural organizations and businesses from the farm to the fork. I have a particular interest in agricultural research, innovation and commercialization, and serve as managing editor and lead writer for AgInnovation Ontario, an online publication focused on agricultural and agri-food innovation.

My work has appeared in Ontario Hog Farmer, Ontario Beef Farmer, Canadian Cattlemen, Ontario Grain Farmer, The Corn Producer, British Farmer and Grower, Farm Contractor and Large Scale Farmer, Ontario Farmer, Western Producer, Grainews, The Farm Journalist, AgriSuccess, Ontario Dairy Farmer, Top Crop Manager, Country Guide, The Alliance, Alberta Express, Ontario Beef Magazine, The Grower, Niagara This Week,Guelph Mercury, Guelph Tribune, Owen Sound Sun Times, Hamilton Spectator, Waterloo Region Record and Canadian Woodworking.

Prior to working independently, I worked in management roles with AGCare (now Farm & Food Care Ontario), the University of Guelph and Ontario Pork, where I was responsible for producer communications, media relations, promotion programs and issues management.

I was co-chair of the 2011 International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) annual congress, a highly successful and well-attended event that was hosted by Canada for the first time since 1967. It attracted nearly 300 agricultural journalists and communicators from more than 30 countries to southern Ontario.

I’ve been honoured to win multiple awards for writing excellence from the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation and I was fortunate to be chosen as a 2010 winner of the IFAJ Alltech Young Leaders’ Award for agricultural journalism.

I’m a graduate of the University of Guelph and the Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program.
