Lilian Schaer is an independent agricultural journalist, writer and communications specialist with two decades of experience in the Canadian industry. She works with organizations and businesses across the agriculture, agri-food and agri-innovation space, helping them with writing, communications activities and projects, and event planning and management.

For the last four years, Lilian served as managing editor and senior writer for AgInnovation Ontario, an online publication focused on agricultural and agri-food innovation, where her articles were picked up by mainstream and specialty publications across Canada and internationally. Funding for the program was discontinued in 2018.

As an active freelance journalist, she covers all sectors of agriculture, with a particular specialization in research and innovation.

She writes a bi-weekly agri-innovation column for Farmtario, reports regularly for the Ontario Farmer, and currently contributes to Country Guide, AgriSuccess, Ontario Hog Farmer, Ontario Dairy Farmer, Ontario Beef, Greenhouse Canada, Canadian Cattlemen, Canadian Poultry, Milk Producer, and the Ontario Apple Growers’ blog. She also writes for various international publications.

Previously, Lilian held management roles with several Ontario farm organizations, as well as the University of Guelph, and has also worked in Germany and in the UK.

She was co-chair of the 2011 International Federation of Agricultural Journalists’ congress and is a past winner of the Alltech Young Leaders Award in agricultural journalism. She is also the winner of multiple writing awards from the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation.
